15th Annual Dog Bowl Run

  11/24/2023 — The 15th Annual Dog Bowl Run is complete, and in the books. With just a :10 second deficit, we congratulate Dave Markert on his first DBR victory. The DBR relic will again reside on Vanderbilt Lane in Portsmouth following son Charlie Markert’s victory in 2020.


It was a close finish for the top three with Steven Lopes finishing one second behind Dave with just an :11 second deficit. Aforementioned Charlie Markert finishing third with just a :12 second deficit. Charlie was also the fastest finisher, completing the 3.05 miles course in just 19 minutes, 06 seconds. 


Before awarding the traveling trophy to this year’s champion, we also presented a certificate of recognition to Frank McNeilly for his dedication. Upon completion of this milestone 15th DBR, Frank distinguished himself by becoming the only competitor to have completed all fifteen iterations of the event. Although he’s never won the event, he has definitely proven his dedication. Frank finished this year’s event in 4th place with just a :16 second deficit. We’re confident his name will adorn the DBR trophy in the very near future. Congratulations Frank.


Yet again, we set a record for the largest turnout for the DBR with 29 participants toeing the starting line. Several were DBR first-timers. They were: Eric Sardinha, Isabel Sardinha (and Eliza Sardinha), Harper Gaudet, Alison Hamilton, Amy Hamilton, John Hamilton (jr), Trish Maggiacomo, Meagan Goulart, Joey Schiano, and Bill Douglas (that’s not a typo). Additionally, there were also a few fans, friends, and family on hand for the post-run celebration and feed. Thank you also to Marie Force for the coleslaw, and general help, and Emily Force, and Jake Force for their assistance throughout the event.


Big thanks to Dave and Gretchen Markert for again providing the roasted pork, and for Karen McNeilly for the meatballs. It was an outstanding gathering and feed. If anyone has photos of the run, pre- or post-run activities please send them to me, or just post them here.


Looking ahead…the 16th Annual DBR is scheduled for Friday 11/29/2024.

  The 17th Annual Dog Bowl Run is complete. For an unprecedented 6th time we’re congratulating Mike McNeilly as the Dog Bowl Run champion. Mike was just :05 seconds slower of his estimated time of  23:35 . In second place was Mike’s son, Leo, at just :06 seconds faster than his estimated time of  23:28 . In third place was former DBR champion Steven “Dog Sr.” Lopes. He was just :07 seconds slower than his estimated time of 28:00. The fastest finisher was Charles P. Markert with a time of  19:19 . We had yet another great turnout, with twenty-nine participants toeing the starting line. We also welcomed back former DBR champion Liam Callahan for the first time since his victory 2017. A few starters did not post a qualifying time (DNP), and there were only 23 finishers that registered a time. I think the weather was a factor, and they can’t be blamed for turning around early.
